# Configure employee settings

> The Typing Indicator toggle and retiring an AI Employee permanently.

**Settings** is the last of the seven tabs on an AI Employee's card. It covers general behavior configuration and the one irreversible action available for an employee.

## Typing indicator

This toggle controls whether the employee displays a "typing…" indicator while composing a reply — for example, showing *"Sophia is typing…"* before a message appears. It is a small detail, but it adds a sense of liveliness to the conversation, making the exchange feel closer to an in-progress human conversation rather than replies appearing instantly with no visual cue that a response is being formed.

1. Open the **Settings** tab on an employee.
2. Toggle **Typing Indicator** on or off.
3. Changes apply immediately — no save step required.

## Retire an AI Employee

<Warning>
  Retiring an employee permanently deletes it. Once retired, it is no longer available anywhere on the platform, it is removed from every automation using it, and **this cannot be undone**.
</Warning>

Under **Danger Zone**, click **Retire the AI employee**. A confirmation dialog explains that all data inside the employee will be deleted, then asks you to type its name to confirm before the **Delete** button becomes active.

Before retiring, confirm there is no ongoing need for that employee's configuration, conversation history, or setup — there is no way to restore it afterward. If you only want to pause an employee without losing its setup, use **Set Inactive** instead — see [employee status](/help/ai-employees/going-live/how-ai-employees-work-in-automations#employee-status-active-inactive-retired) for the difference between inactive and retired.
